Pachiappan loves Anjala but cannot marry her till he makes a name for himself. He finds an opportunity when he meets Chakravorthy, his lookalike and a popular director.

The story describes the struggle of a young villager Kangeyan (played by Rajinikanth) to receive justice for his brother's murder. Manickam falls in love with Mallika, the daughter of Pannaiar. Mallika's marriage is arranged with Dorai (played by Raghuvaran) but refuses and declares her love for Mannikam. Kangeyan gets them married in the village. The priest pretends to have divine powers and uses superstitious belief of the villagers to kill Manickam. Kangeyan, not wanting to see Mallika as a widow, decides to her married again to Pandian, a cart driver who was her childhood friend. Dorai intervenes again proceeding to use superstition again and Kangeyan learns about truth behind his brother death exposing the priest and Dorai losing his lover in the process.

Kumbudraen Saamy (Arya) is a skilled thief who cons people for a living. His cross-eyed half-brother Walter Vanangamudi (Vishal Krishna)is not so good at at the same trade. They are born to the same father but to different mothers. The two men quarrel frequently and Saamy often pokes fun at Walter's shortcomings. Highness (GM Kumar) as he is dearly called by the brothers is a local zamindar who enjoy's the company of both Saamy and Walter and takes an affinity toward them and treats them as his own family. Once, a masked Walter breaks into Police Constable Baby's (Janani Iyer) house, but she recognizes the man and thwarts his attempt to rob them. Later they develop a fondness for each other, mostly born out of Walter's childish nature and submission to Baby's persuasiveness. Saamy too develops a relationship with Thenmozhi (Madhu Shalini) who cons him by giving him her fake gold bangles.

A lawyer, who defends criminals, wages vigilante justice against them in private. The movie deals with the murder of a girl who was ragged and brutally murdered by her classmates. The lawyer, through his own investigation arrives at the fact that she was brutally raped by college authorities and framed the students as culprits.
